The findings in the Cingarela cave confirm that Momjan was inhabited even in the prehistoric times due to its water springs and favorable position. Momjan was the centre of the prehistoric castle ruins, and it was probably inhabited in the Roman times as well (Castrum Mammilianum). The town was first mentioned in an imperial document in 1035. In 1102 Ulrich II Weimar donated some of his land in Istria, among which was the Momjan feud, to the Patriarchate of Aquilea. This countryside is known as the Kingdom of Muscat for its many producers of quality wine, above all top quality Muscat wine.
